Pronunciation: DOX-e-pin
Generic Name: Doxepin
Brand Name: Silenor
Silenor is used for:
Treating insomnia (trouble sleeping) in patients who have trouble staying asleep. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Silenor is a sleep medicine. Exactly how it works is not known. It is thought that Silenor works by blocking the effects of histamine in the brain. This helps you to stay asleep after you fall asleep.
Do NOT use Silenor if:
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Silenor or to tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amoxapine)
- you have untreated narrow angle glaucoma or severe trouble urinating
- you have taken linezolid, methylene blue, or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, furazolidone, phenelzine) within the past 14 days
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.
Before using Silenor:
Some medical conditions may interact with Silenor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

- if you have a history of glaucoma, kidney problems, liver problems, trouble breathing while asleep (sleep apnea), or trouble urinating
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Silenor. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
- Antifungal medicines (eg, fluconazole, terbinafine), carbamazepine, cimetidine, mibefradil, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine, thioridazine), or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine, sertraline) because they may increase the risk of Silenor's side effects
- Antiarrhythmics (eg, flecainide, propafenone, quinidine), anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), arsenic, astemizole, bepridil, chloroquine, cisapride, domperidone, halofantrine, ibutilide, iloperidone, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), maprotiline, certain medicines for nausea (eg, dolasetron), methadone, paliperidone, pentamidine, pimozide, quinolone antibiotics (eg, levofloxacin), sulfonylureas (eg, tolazamide), sympathomimetics (eg, formoterol, pseudoephedrine), terfenadine, tetrabenazine, tramadol, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (eg, nilotinib), or ziprasidone because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Silenor
